British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," he added. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."
Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
