Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
